Protecting Our Mental Health: A Guide to Self-Care
Mental health; it is one of the blessings that we need to take care of. Just as we prioritize our physical well-being through exercise and a balanced diet, we must also take proactive steps to safeguard our mental and emotional health. Here are some practical tips and strategies to help protect and nurture our mental health.
1. Self-awareness
The first step in protecting our mental health is self-awareness. Take the time to reflect on our emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. If you feel like you are going through a lot lately, assess back our true emotions, and accept the fact that you might need help. Try to identify any patterns or triggers that may contribute to stress or anxiety. Once you identified them, avoid doing activities that might triggers you from feeling stress or anxious. Journaling can be a helpful tool in this process. By becoming more aware of our feelings and reactions, you can better understand ourselves and make informed decisions about our mental health.
2. Prioritize self-care
Self-care is not selfish; it's essential for maintaining good mental health. Make self-care a priority in our daily routine. This could include activities such as meditation, exercise, reading, taking a relaxing bath, or spending quality time with loved ones. As for me, I do prioritize my me-time, at least for 2 hours everyday. I would do the things that I love, be it playing guitar, reading, or even walking in the night. We must ensure that we allocate time for activities that bring you joy and relaxation. Most of the time, we spend our time for someone else, but we never actually care or paying attention to the time that we spend for ourselves. Isn't that unfair for us? :)
3. Get enough sleep
Sleep is crucial for mental health. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night. This is important, as our mind and body needs enough rest and energy to operate efficiently on the next day. Create a bedtime routine that helps you unwind and relax before sleep. As for me, I would usually read before I fall asleep (not because reading is boring). From my fav romance novel, to short sentimental poems, they would help me to relax my mind before I sleep. Also, avoid caffeine and electronic screens before bedtime, as they can interfere with sleep quality. Trust me, you would want to avoid taking caffeine before you sleep, especially if its 800ml of coffee right before you fall asleep (not speaking from my experience, of course :p) You would feel worse when you wake up in the morning, and our body might react differently to it (hands/legs starts to shake, migraine and get hungry easily lol)
4. Set boundaries
Learning to set healthy boundaries is essential for protecting our mental health. Say "no" when you need to, and don't overcommit ourselves. Self-sacrificing can be so dangerous, as we might assume that it is normal to always give in and spend our energy anytime, anywhere to someone else. Ask for help if you ever need one. Don't be all by ourselves whenever you feel hopeless. It's never a bad thing to ask for help. Establish boundaries in our personal and professional life to prevent burnout and stress.
5. Connect with others
Social connections are vital for mental well-being. Nurture our relationships with family and friends. Share our thoughts and feelings with trusted individuals, and don't hesitate to lean on them for support when needed. Don't worry about our story being too boring, or no one wants to listen to our story. Just share whatever that you want to, and let it all out. Loneliness and isolation can contribute to mental health issues, so make an effort to stay connected.
Protecting our mental health is an ongoing process that requires self-awareness, self-care, and a commitment to making positive changes in our life. By implementing these strategies, we can create a strong foundation for our mental well-being and lead a happier, more fulfilling life. Remember that we deserve to prioritize our mental health, and seeking help when needed is a sign of strength, not weakness.
Take care, everyone!
