Navigating the Storm: Personal Strategies for Dealing with Depressing Episodes

Life can be a rollercoaster of emotions, and sometimes, we find ourselves caught in the grips of a depressing episode. Whether triggered by external events or internal struggles, these episodes can feel overwhelming. Here are some personal strategies that can help us navigate through challenging times. While everyone's journey is unique, these insights might offer some guidance on how to cope with and overcome depressive episodes on a personal level.

1. Self-Compassion

Be kind to yourself. Treat yourself with the same compassion and understanding that you would offer to a friend going through a tough time. Remember that everyone faces challenges, and it's okay to struggle. Most of us always treat others better compared to treating themselves. Having the selfless trait is good, but having overdoing it might backfire us. Therefore, remember: always put yourself first and be kind to your own self.

2. Reach Out for Support

Don't hesitate to lean on your support system. Share your feelings with a trusted friend or family member. Sometimes, expressing what you're going through can provide immense relief. We might feel like we are burdening them with at times, but that's not the case. Our loved ones will definitely willing to show up and assist us whenever we are in need of help. Therefore, don't feel bad to reach out. Who knows, maybe in the future, they will seek out for your help :)

3. Mindfulness and Grounding Techniques

Practice mindfulness to stay present in the moment. Grounding techniques, such as deep breathing or focusing on your senses, can help anchor you during overwhelming emotions. Take your minds off from the things that make you feel sad. Think about things that make you feel happy and calm. As for me, I usually would think about my cats, or precious memories that I have with my friends. By doing this, we can feel much calmer.

4. Create a Safe Space

Identify a physical or mental space where you feel safe and at peace. It could be a cozy corner at home, a favorite park, or a mental retreat through meditation. Retreat to this space when needed. As for me, I would usually go to the rooftop of my home at night. Chilling there while staring at the skies make me feel much better.

5. Limit Exposure to Triggers

Identify and limit exposure to triggers that overwhelm your feelings of depression. This could include certain people, environments, or activities that contribute to your distress. You don't necessarily have to isolate yourself from everyone, you just have to avoid interacting with the triggers, and try to live your day as usual, as best as you can. It might be difficult at times, because we might be randomly thinking about the triggers, but it's best to avoid any causes that could make you trigger to be depressed.

Dealing with depressing episodes is a personal journey, and there's no one-size-fits-all solution. Experiment with these strategies, adapt them to your needs, and remember that it's okay to ask for help. The road to recovery may be challenging, but by taking small steps and prioritizing self-care, you can navigate through the storm and emerge stronger on the other side.
